Project Summary | We aim to develop a set of two open textbooks for beginning Chinese, i.e., CHIN131 and CHIN133, with three majors goals: 1. to increase affordability for students, 2. to adjust content based on the Canadian context, and 3. to provide a better alignment between learning and UBC’s strategic plans. The textbooks will include a total of 12 lessons and each with the reading and assessment materials. The reading materials will be developed on the Pressbooks platform with interactive components, e.g., video/audios and interactive comprehension questions. The assessment materials will include formative tasks developed through h5p and summative tasks in Canvas. Feedback and evaluation will be collected from students, TAs and instructors, and users outside the program, through surveys, focus group discussions, etc.. Textbooks will be shared with an open license so that colleagues outside UBC, especially from smaller Chinese programs in BC to support the teaching of Chinese. |
