Project SummaryCSIS 450 uses different frameworks and lenses to look at performances that defy gender normativity in differentparts of the globe. We explore how not only femininity and/or masculinity are being recreated, reaffirmed, or mocked in these performances, but also ideas (and ideals) about race, class, body shapes and abilities, national and local belonging, and ethnicity. We think about how “drag” can simultaneously reflect, reinforce, and resist ideologies from mainstream cultures. The course combines content learning and practice: students not only learn about various theories and concepts related to the critical study of sexuality they also produce and present a collective publication based on the topics we cover.

The students will engage in the creation of an edited book on a performance that defies gender normativity. Using images, video, and audio files from open online sources (e.g. Digital Transgender Archive, City of Vancouver Archive, etc.), students will research and write a visual essay inside of Pressbooks. The essays will follow an editorial structure and style guide to ensure a quality and accessibly designed book.

The course assignment will follow open pedagogy principles and practices that focus on engaging students as
partners and stakeholders in creating new knowledge. This supports students in taking ownership of their learning and gives them space and time to create, while learning important skills, such as understanding copyright, writing for a broad audience, creating and editing in an online publishing platform, and collaborating in creating a publication.
