Project SummaryUBC’s first-semester calculus class has recently been overhauled. The new curriculum does not neatly fit any of our existing open resources. Students currently are directed, via a carefully maintained table, to specific sections of various textbooks. Within these resources, students sometimes encounter topics that are not covered in our syllabus, and some topics from the syllabus are not well represented in the textbooks. Students who want to study beyond the narrow confines of their assigned homework are often confused, and have a hard time studying efficiently.

Drawing from existing OER, we will create a single resource for students in Math 100. Students will be able to peruse this textbook without worrying about what is and is not relevant to their course. For conventions that differ between textbooks, instructors will have a single authority to refer to.

The deliverable of this project is an online textbook. It will primarily be remixed from existing OER content. There has also been content developed specifically for Math 100 that will be included, with the consent of its authors. A small amount of new material relating to course goals will be developed. The textbook will adhere as closely as possible to the course content, with periodic updates to make the connection between learning outcomes and the textbook seamless.
