Project SummaryThe development of Reading Skills in Second Language Acquisition allows students to acquire grammar and vocabulary while also gaining cultural awareness and intercultural understanding. With this project we intend to create open resources to help students of Italian language develop their reading skills. More specifically, we propose to create one to two open textbook readers, using Public Domain Italian literature, whether in the form of short stories or short fiction books. Under the supervision of the project lead and the co-applicant and with the support of UBC Library personnel, the students who will be hired for this project, will identify and select copyright free Italian literature and develop interactive online activities to give learners systematic approaches to analyzing Italian texts. Readers will learn how knowing certain grammar points, knowing how sentence structures work and knowing essential vocabulary words will give them the keys to understanding Italian. Using PressBooks, this project will develop one to two open textbook readers using the glossary functionality and potentially H5P to create an interactive language reader that can be used in Italian courses at UBC.
