Project Summary | We are proposing the development of an interactive, open access textbook using Pressbooks with modules and virtual gaming simulation (VGS) related to interprofessional communication for healthcare professional students at UBC. This resource will be tailored to the post-secondary level healthcare student. For these resources, the definition of interprofessional communication represents the patient- provider interaction in multiple disciplines. It does not represent patient hand-offs or other interactions that occur provider-to-provider. Gathering the expertise of multiple UBC Health program disciplines, this project will ensure that pre- licensure health professional students at UBC have foundational skills in therapeutic communication. Healthcare professionals are integral to the healthcare system in BC and when they communicate effectively patient outcomes are improved. Therefore, a vital component of health professional educational preparation includes interprofessional education (IPE) (Foronda & McArthur, 2016). One of the challenges of IPE is ensuring that all healthcare students are exposed to standardized patient-provider communication experiences that are common across professions regardless of role, and an opportunity to practice this skill in a safe environment. We aim to enhance uptake in UBC Health disciplines of foundational and consistent learning regarding patient-provider health communication. The existing healthcare programs at UBC incorporate interprofessional education in various formats (e.g., lecture, lab/simulation, clinical placements, online). One of the driving visions for the proposed resources is to have an adaptable and granular nature, making it possible for them to be reused, adapted, and remixed in various ways based on the needs of specific programs. Our granular approach is crucial to the widespread uptake of this complete set of communication resources and will allow for a broad integration of resources across all UBC Health disciplines. Additionally, this set of resources can be accessed by healthcare students and professionals as a self-study learning resource to help them prepare for national exams, internationally educated health care provider preparation for assessment and practice, and for continuing competency as a health care provider (HCP). |
